This genuine rail spike is decorated with a delicate steam locomotive pulling a line of freight.
The first steam engine was developed in 1712 but it wasn't until 1830 that high pressure steam locomotives began to bring goods and people across the land. By 1870 they were supplying 85% of the motive power in North America. These units have since retired, being replaced by the more modern diesel locomotives that began service in 1925.
