Fascinating history of the Monterey and Pacific Grove Street Railway. The line, which began as as a successful horse-drawn streetcar, rapidly expanded and was electrified early on. It provided clean, efficient transportation for the area. Unfortunately, the utility companies which owned it drained the profits, argues the author, and left it to die once motor coaches appeared. The book provides a detailed look at the horse car days (which are often skipped over in street car books) as well as an examination of the successes and failures of the electric street railway. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. Includes rosters, financial valuations, corporate genealogy, and bibliography. This is Interurbans Special 112. 80 pages with index.
